DBUPDATE MUST be run following loading patch updates…

The SYSMAN command DBUPDATE must be run in order to load the updates into each database.

( Updates #310 for V14.0 and #39 for V14.2 MUST be applied before the following is used. )
Latest updates should be downloaded from the Support page.

On Windows 14.2(and above) & UNIX
You need to log into all databases as database owner and run DBUPDATE manually.
On Windows V14.0
The GUI installer prompts for a list of databases to be updated, DBUPDATE is run on each selected database automatically.

The following explains what the DBUPDATE command does:

  • When run you will be asked to continue or not and prompted for your initials to record the update load.
  • All database, e.g. DataBasic/Proc/File, changes are applied.
  • Latest compiler updates are applied.
  • Latest security, e.g. network/user/security file, updates are applied.
  • Each user account MD is then updated, e.g. verbs, and details are listed for any that have been changed, with the original archived for review by the user.

You will then be logged off…

Notes:

  1. Any Reality update applied can affect host platform installation and database file content. There were some issues when users either didn’t run or found undesirable effects if they ran SYS-UPDATE. However, after resolving several issues, DBUPDATE MUST be run following the loading of updates. Unlike a SYS-UPDATE, which must be run during a release upgrade and user operations checked as detailed in the Installation Guides, DBUPDATE is designed not to affect current user operation, providing that documented warnings of modifying system files has been followed.
  2. As for loading updates, it is strongly recommended that all users should be logged out of the Reality database when DBUPDATE is run otherwise active users may not see the changes until they logout and back in.
  3. After restoring system accounts (SYSMAN, SYSPROG, SYSFILES or GLOBAL.MD) from a database that used an earlier version of Reality a SYS-UPDATE is required. For non-system accounts then only an UPDATE-ACCOUNT is required to be run.
  4. For further information refer to the Documentation, under Updates, installing in the index, where UNIX and Windows are fully explained.
  5. The host command listdb can be used to generate a list of all databases on the system.
