How to resolve issues with Windows [Demo] Installation

Reality is a database and programming product set working closely with Windows. It loads its Session Manager, realserv, as a Windows Service and other low level interfaces. Therefore issues can be seen during the [Demo] installation.

The following offers advice if you see any error messages during the automated "one click" [Demo] installation. You should also review the latest Reality on Windows, Installation Guide, there is a link to all Installation Guides on the home page of the main Documentation – refer to the Documentation page.

The following covers a brief overview of the [Demo] loading of Reality, followed by an Issue Recovery Section. For information on initial loading refer to General Installation, Demo & Getting StartedFor recovering other issues refer to the FAQ: How to resolve issues with Windows [Custom] Installation. Also refer to Install & Demo FAQs.

[Demo] Installation Overview

The aim of the [Demo] installation is to automatically install Reality, a small database – demodb, RealWeb(Reality DataBasic GUI API), the Documentation and other tools like a self-contained web server after you have selected a suitable drive. You should see various progress windows that cover these steps in the order as below.

To check if Reality and the Demo is loaded sucessfully use the following check list:

  1. The base Reality product set is loaded if you can run the following from an MS DOS prompt:
    Command          Should return with
    reality -v               The version of Reality loaded e.g. Reality64 15.1.0.0 for 64Bit V15.1
realserv -e           Service stopped. Indicates the Reality Service installed and stopped.
realserv -s           Service started. Indicates the Reality Service has now been started

  2. The Reality Demo Database has been loaded if you can run the following from an MS DOS prompt:
    Command           Should return with
reality demodb    TCL logon with details, including the expiry date. Use OFF to exit.

  3. The RealWeb Demo has been loaded if you can run the following:
From Windows START, All Programs, Reality…
… Realweb Demo, "ENGLISH Tutorial, A RealWeb Demonstration"
A webpage should appear with the titile of "Database access via ENGLISH from the Web"
Note: This requires that the supplied Tomcat Web Server is running. If you get a "page not found" error restart Tomcat using the above All Progarms path but with "START Tomcat Web Server" as the command.

If any of the above fails, use the recommendations below…

[Demo] Installation Issue Recovery

You must be a local or domain administrator to load or upgrade Reality and your Windows User ID must not contain spaces.

If you see any reference to PDS History preventing continuing with an install run Setup.exe manually from DVD/ISO_Drive:\client\windows\PDShistory. When loaded successfully you will see a window confirming this has been done – check the taskbar to see if the window is obscured.

1: Base Reality product set not loaded successfully – as per 1. [Demo] Overview above.

Try and load/reload the base product as follows:

  1. Run the setup.exe file from DVD/ISO_Drive:\Reality\Base
If you don't see an InstallAnywhere Introduction Window, see if this is minimised or obscured by another Window.
  2. Select Reality and not Software Keys Only
  3. If Reality is already loaded you will see a confirmation pop-up which allows you to re-install Reality by overwriting, otherwise it will ask to confirm the path to load Reality.
  4. You should be prompted to load a software licence key.
Load the Demo keys by making sure the Path for Keyfile is set to DVD/ISO_Drive:\eval.ryk
  5. You should then see an Install Complete Window, with a [Done] button.

Repeat the base Reality check under [Demo] Installation Overview above…

If the base Reality is still not working try loading the licence keys manually as follows:
From an MS DOS prompt run:
Install_SN
When prompted for a key use Notepad or other text editor and copy the key from the first line of the DVD/ISO_Drive:\eval.ryk file
Note: For V15.1/.2 refer to the Evaluation page for the latest eval.ryk file.
e.g. for a line of:   serialno:***: HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH : Evaluation serial number
… just copy and paste the key HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH < this is not the key, use key from the latest file.
Then repeat the following command for each remaining line in the eval.ryk file
e.g.
Install_Key – when prompted for:
Part Number
… copy and paste the first part of each line of the eval.ryk file –  eg. 80001510:000:
Software Key
… use the 2nd part of each line of the eval.ryk file – eg. HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH HHHH Comment < use key from the latest file.
Comment
… use the 2nd part of each line of the eval.ryk file – eg. Reality 15.1 version key
Finally run a show_key and make sure all lines end with "enabled"

Repeat the base Reality check under [Demo] Installation Overview above…
