What is required to enable SQL ODBC/JDBC and Java interoperability on Windows/UNIX

JReal classes are available on the Reality CD that provide access to Reality data from Java Application and Servlets.

Reality provides for read/update access for ODBC/JDBC Clients and Java programs into Reality databases and out to SQL compatible database files that can then be accessed as native Reality files. The following briefly describes the enabling optional software that is required.

ODBC Driver – Windows:
We supply an ODBC driver for Microsoft fat clients on the Reality CD, which can be loaded from the setup menus, refer to SQL Software under the Main Menu. This is then configured using MS config; e.g. for XP under Admin Tools, Data Sources (ODBC), where RealSQL can be added as a new source. The data source will be the target System containing the Reality Database.

ODBC Driver – UNIX:
(For pure UNIX Clients, or MS thin client ware, e.g. using php to access directly into UNIX)
To have the driver running on UNIX we also provide specific platform drivers on the Reality CD under "CD Drive":\binary\odbcdriver\UNIX_PLATFORM.
Where UNIX_PLATFORM in the above is the required UNIX platform – e.g. sssparc for Sun Solaris.

Here there's an install script, install_realsql. Within the tar file, realsql.tar, there's a readme.txt that also provides details of a required ODBC Manager. While this is not supplied by NIS, details are given of an "open source" product that can be downloaded.

JDBC Driver:
Drivers and Java Docs are supplied for Windows from the setup menus, refer to SQL Software under the Main Menu.
For UNIX platforms – refer to the Reality CD under "CD Drive":\client\unix\java\JDBCdriver, which is accessed using the Reality setup command from UNIX.

Java Classes:
For Windows from the setup menus refer to Core Reality Software in order to load the classes, readme and JavaDocs. For UNIX refer to the files on the CD under "CD Drive":\client\unix\java\JReal, which is accessed using the Reality setup command from UNIX.

Notes:

  1. For further details refer to the On-Line Documentation:

For optional software installation refer to:
"Installation Guides" section, under Client Components for RealSQL/ODBC/JDBC and JReal.

For General use of ODBC/JDBC refer to:
    "SQL for Reality" section.

For general use of Java/JReal refer to:
"Reality Java Interface" section, under  "Web Access".
This section also covers the use of RealWeb that provides a web interface API, MS ActiveX remote calls and exposing subroutines as Web Services, all from within DataBasic.

  2. We no longer charge differently for ODBC and other client access, so these would be taken from the current available user process license count.

  3. Depending on deployment, formal/commercial ODBC Managers can be expensive for UNIX platforms. Depending on the required implementation you could consider using a Windows System with Remote Q/Pointers as an ODBC bridge, as this is part of Windows and we supply the MS ODBC driver as part of Reality delivery.
